Also known as the Helix Galaxy, NGC2685 is part of a rare class of galaxies called polar ring galaxies. These types of galaxies have a ring of gas and stars that rotates perpendicular to the typical plane of the galaxy. NGC2685 is thought to have collided with one or more galaxies which produced the polar ring.
